American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) was officially established as a multidisciplinary organization in 1952 when the use of ultrasound for medical diagnosis was in its infancy. Medical pioneers recognized the potential of this fast-growing imaging modality and agreed on the need to advance the art and science of ultrasound in medicine and research.

Congratulations to Tommaso di Ianni, who has won The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine's New Investigator Award 2017 for his presentation "Quantitative vector flow imaging for portable ultrasound"

Tommaso is a PhD student at Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging in the Biomedical Engineering Group at DTU Elektro and his research will eventually allow full visualization of the blood flow using a portable ultrasound scanner.

Conventional ultrasound velocity estimation requires beam-to-flow angles below 60 degrees, which are difficult to achieve in the presence of parallel or turbulent flow. Vector flow imaging (VFI) overcomes this limitation by estimating the velocity components in 2D or 3D.

Implementing VFI in a tablet-based scanner will be a game changer in the improvement of the current clinical practice.

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) is a multidisciplinary organization with a mission to advance the art and science of ultrasound in medicine and research.
